How To Kick-Start Your Vision - I promise you it will be fun!
Some of you are sorry to have missed our event last week.
Not to worry though, we don’t want you to have to wait until next workshop to get started. You can get started on your vision board now!
What is a vision board?
Well, it is a fun way to tap into what you want for yourself and others. Using the 'creative' side of your brain, the side that thinks about options and possibilities, rather than the logical and analytical side, you know, that side that tells you that 'you can’t possibly do that'!
'Why bother?' I hear you say? Well, leaders must have a vision, otherwise, where are they going? And how are they going to bring people with them? And it's well known that great sports people visualise for success - the ball going in the hole, crossing the finishing line!
What may interest you more, is that women are judged to be less visionary than men (check out Women and the Vision Thing; by Herminia Ibarra and Otilia Obodaru, Harvard Business Review), which has a direct link to success.
And anyway, when was the last time you were just a little bit indulgent?
So here's what you do:
- Gather up as many old magazines as you can find, all varieties, a large poster size of paper, some scissors and a glue stick
- Find a quiet reflective space where you can be alone and not interrupted for an hour or so.
- Now chose a time in the future for your vision – 1 year, 3 years, 5 years
- Decide if you want to focus on your personal or professional life – preferably both, as one affects the other
- Get 'into the zone'. Consider this like a daydream - this might mean closing your eyes for a bit
- Now let your mind roam free, imagining that anything is possible! (There is no risk with this – you may as well play along!)
- Imagine if there were no obstacles what would I love to achieve in the next couple of years? What will I be doing? Who would I be doing it with? How would I be feeling? What would be amazing?
- Now, start flicking through your magazines and intuitively pick out the pictures and headlines that stand out to you – the things that represent what you want to create or change. Don’t spend any time analyzing it, just allow your ‘gut instinct' to choose for you
- Gather your clippings on your large piece of paper, sticking them on to it when you sense everything is there as you want it
- Now look at the finished article. Soak it all in!
This inspires you to believe in your future, and generates the confidence to visualize and articulate your goals.
Now all you have to do is find a way for you to see your Vision Board every day, so it will inspire you and keep you on track. Somewhere along the way, magic happens, and things will start to change.
